overview

During my summer internship, I worked under the marketing team to support the redesigning process of the company's website. They had launched their new brand identity a couple weeks before I joined as an intern; I had the opportunity to dig into specific components to make sure that the designs encompassed their new brand guidelines and were supported through research.

internship goals‍
Going into the internship, I had 3 goals I wanted to achieve.

1. Understand the UX/UI design career path
2. Improve UX research + design skills
3. Make meaningful relationships

my experience + impact
goal 1:
Although I had a general idea of the career field I wanted to go into, I felt that I was limiting myself to purely doing visual UI work. Coming from a fine arts and graphic design background, I had only known of making things look "aesthetically pleasing". However this internship granted me the opportunity to dig deeper into new UX research skills and guide me to a more well-rounded designer.

goal 2:
Working alongside my mentor [Manager @ Strategy Team], I was able to get exposed to the use of Google Analytics within the UX research field. I learned the impact of quantitative data and how I can use these data points to explain/support my design decisions. Additionally, he introduced me to a heatmap resource [Crazy Egg] New Relic uses to track how the users interact with the product—which I also utilized to pinpoint areas of opportunity when redesigning the site's components.

With these new analytic skills, I was able to design an A/B test for New Relic's product sign-up page which ultimately
increased the user-interaction by 33%.

goal 3:
One of the most rewarding experiences I gained from this internship program was making meaningful connections. My manager was always willing to help and very accommodating throughout the entire 13 weeks; through our weekly check-ins and chats on Slack, I was able to learn about how I can utilize my graphic design background to improve my UX design practices.

My mentor was also a very big motivator throughout my internship. He always went above and beyond to give me career and life advice when I expressed my confusion and uncertainly as a rising senior in college. We have scheduled monthly check-ins even after the internship has ended, and I am forever grateful to have met such an inspiring mentor! :)
